Sodium Sulphate Anhydrous Applicate in Glass Making

1. As a flux

Lowering the melting temperature: Mirabilite decomposes into sodium oxide (Na₂O) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) at high temperatures, providing free oxygen and reducing the viscosity of the glass liquid, thereby reducing the energy required for melting and saving production costs.

In the production of soda-lime glass, mirabilite can partially or completely replace soda ash (Na₂CO₃). Although the sodium content it provides is slightly lower than that of soda ash, its cost is lower, and it is especially suitable for glass types that do not have high requirements for sodium content.

2. As a clarifying agent

Eliminating bubbles: At high temperatures, the SO₂ gas released by the decomposition of mirabilite can adsorb the bubbles in the glass liquid, causing them to float and burst, significantly enhancing the transparency and uniformity of the glass. This function is particularly important in bottle and jar glass as well as vessel glass.

3. Adjust the performance of the glass

Improving thermal stability: Adding an appropriate amount of mirabilite can optimize the thermal expansion coefficient of glass and enhance its heat resistance, making it suitable for heat-resistant glassware or cookware.

Controlling chemical stability: By adjusting the sodium ion content, it affects the water resistance and corrosion resistance of the glass, and is often used in the production of ordinary sodium-calcium glass.

4. Application Scenarios

Common sodium-calcium glass: Mirabilite is a common raw material for traditional sodium-calcium glass (such as flat glass, bottle and jar glass), and is used in combination with quartz sand, limestone, etc.

Special glass: In optical glass and low-expansion glass, mirabilite can assist in adjusting the refractive index and thermal performance, but the dosage must be strictly controlled to avoid negative effects.

Summary

Mirabilite has the functions of fluxing, clarifying and performance regulating in glass production, and is especially suitable for the manufacturing of ordinary glass that is sensitive to cost. Its application needs to balance process requirements, environmental protection requirements and product performance, and it is one of the important functional raw materials in the glass industry.
